Obama told ASU graduates that we should work for other's interests, but working in your own self interest helps others.
I've found someone to be successful for--my own children.
So, let them say what they will. I am working for the children...my own.

Nothing will motive a man like getting him to work for himself, for his own comfort, for his own posterity. This is time-tested and proven, even though some countries still try to disprove it.
Obama clearly fails at being an inspirational leader, given what you've stated. By my own observations, I feel like he is trying to find ways to convert our beloved country into a socialist nation.
If Obama really wants to be like Lincoln, let him take from Lincoln's example. Along the lines of your example Brian, in response to the Dred Scott decision, Lincoln wrote the following:
The slave whom you cannot drive with the lash to break seventy-five pounds of hemp in a day, if you will task him to break a hundred, and promise him pay for all he does over, he will break you a hundred and fifty. You have substituted hope for the rod.
Obama offers socialism, not industry. If there's an incentive, people who want to succeed will do more and everyone will benefit. As supply increases, costs go down. If ten men can do the work of 100, it leaves the other 90 free to find something else at which they find sufficient motivation to excel.
